Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as National Guard Arrive in Metropolis

Former President Donald J. Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on his platform early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker too!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic party.

These remarks coincide with the deployment of state military personnel in the Chicago region under orders from the federal administration, notwithstanding vehement protests from Illinois authorities such as the governor and mayor.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump attempted to have a Black man wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on that day. "I am staying put."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, declaring: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now demanding arrests of elected officials checking his power. What remains on the path to full-blown autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the administration advances with its aggressive urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though police data indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, such as murders.

On Wednesday, 200 state guard members were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred state military personnel preparing to mobilize, per sources. Officials indicated the troops would not perform police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with state guard patches were spotted at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and other supplies. Mobile units were arranged in lines. Extra barriers was placed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the military base for safety concerns until 6 December.

Federal authorities has intensified immigration enforcement in the city in recent weeks, sparking demonstrations, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, state and city filed a lawsuit against the federal government, attempting to halt the military dispatch, asking a federal judge to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on the city and state, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is set for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also issued an directive on that day banning ICE officers and related personnel from using municipal facilities as staging areas for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has charged the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on the previous day, he said that Trump is attempting to "justify and normalize the deployment of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act restricts the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. Yet, Trump has said he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to send active duty military in regions that are failing to suppress an insurrection or are defying federal law.

Since starting his new administration, Trump has dispatched or discussed deploying troops to at least 10 urban centers, such as Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the military presence is essential to combat crime and defend ICE officers.

Data shows that serious offenses nationwide has declined in recent years. In the city, for instance, homicides were down 31% to under three hundred through late summer, per police data.

New survey data published on that day found that most Americans disapprove of the deployment of troops without an external threat.
