Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question particular decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
